Seventy-eight Lil Wayne headlining arena and amphitheater concerts in North America from Dec. 14, 2008, through Sept. 6, 2009, grossed approximately $42 million and drew nearly 804,000 fans, according to Lil Wayne tour producer and tour business manager Shawn Gee, who also serves as president of music and entertainment at Sports & Entertainment Financial Group.  It looks like the rapper will have the highest grossing hip-hop tour of the year.

Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs announces several upgrades to the iTunes service, as well as a new line of video-recording iPod Nanos.  Among a range of improvements to the iTunes software is the addition of what Jobs called the iTunes LP, the official name for the digital album project known until now as Cocktail. Artists such as Bob Dylan, the Doors and Dave Matthews already have iTunes LPs for sale in the store, offering exclusive bonus tracks, videos, photos, lyrics and more for $17 to those users who upgrade to the new version of iTunes.

The additions come amidst other upgrades such as a revamped navigation system, upgrades to the Genius recommendation service, tweaks to the artist and music pages, integration with Facebook and Twitter accounts, and new synching abilities that include filtering by genre. Of particular interest is the new Home Sharing feature, which lets iTunes users share songs and video content with up to 5 computers in the same household, and view content from each authorized computer within iTunes.

Katy Perry was one of a dozen acts appearing as part of the Vans Warped Tour’s 15th anniversary celebration, which gathered several trek veterans, including NOFX, Bad Religion, Rise Against, All-American Rejects and Underoath, along with newcomers 3OH!3, Aggrolites and two all-star bands created just for the occasion (read: thrown together) for a one-off show and a one-time event hitting 460 movie theaters on September 17th.

The All-American Rejects offered hits like “Swing Swing” and “Move Along,” Rise Against pummeled through fan favorites “The Good Left Undone” and “Savior” and Bad Religion (with Brett Gurewitz) kicked out “Do What You Want” and “Fuck Armageddon.” Making a rare stage appearance was Ice T with Body Count, now consisting of entirely new members, and later with Pennywise, which recently parted ways with its singer Jim Lindbergh, and recruited NOFX’s Fat Mike, Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath and Bad Religion’s Jay Bentley and Brooks Wackerman for a show-stopping finale of “Bro Hymn.”
